Dogs jump up when they are excited or when they want attention.

Here are some tips to help stop this behavior.

bulletIf your dog looks like he's about to jump up, don't make eye contact and don't wave your arms or speak in an excited voice.  Give the sit command, then bend down, avoiding eye contact, and pet the dog on his chest or sides (not the top of his head) and praise him.

bulletIf your dog jumps up, quickly side step him so that he will miss you. You could also turn away from a jumping dog. As he pauses in response to being shunned, tell him to sit, then reward him by bending down and petting him quietly at his level.

bulletSome breeds need to express their enthusiasm with leaps of joy.  Teach these dogs to jump straight up and down with out making contact with anyone.  Make "JUMP" a command so that it can be turned on and off when needed.   To teach this, let him jump, but don't allow him to land on you.

bulletTeach your dog not to jump on visitors.  You will need the help of a friend for this one.  Have a friend come over with some treats.  Before your friend arrives put the dog on a leash so that he can be controlled.  When your friend comes into the house, give the dog the sit command.  When your dog sits, have your friend give him a treat.  Repeat several times, and with several different people, until the dog stops trying to  jump on them.
